Characterizing path graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs
A path graph is the intersection graph of subpaths of a tree. In 1970, Renz asked for a characterization of path graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. We answer this question by determining the complete list of graphs that are not path graphs and are minimal with this property. 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 62: 369–384, 2009
متن کاملRestricted Coloring Problems and Forbidden Induced Subgraphs
An acyclic coloring of a graph is a proper coloring such that any two color classes induce a forest. A star coloring of a graph is an acyclic coloring with the further restriction that the forest induced by any two color classes is a disjoint collection of stars. We consider the behavior of these problems when restricted to certain classes of graphs. In particular, we give characterizations of ...
متن کاملLine Graphs and Forbidden Induced Subgraphs
Beineke and Robertson independently characterized line graphs in terms of nine forbidden induced subgraphs. In 1994, S8 olte s gave another characterization, which reduces the number of forbidden induced subgraphs to seven, with only five exceptional cases. A graph is said to be a dumbbell if it consists of two complete graphs sharing exactly one common edge. In this paper, we show that a graph...
متن کاملForbidden induced subgraphs for star-free graphs
Let H be a family of connected graphs. A graph G is said to be H-free if G is H-free for every graph H in H. In [1] it was pointed that there is a family of connected graphs H not containing any induced subgraph of the claw having the property that the set of H-free connected graphs containing a claw is finite, provided also that those graphs have minimum degree at least two and maximum degree ...
متن کاملColoring Graphs with Forbidden Induced Subgraphs
Efficiently coloring an arbitrary graph is a fundamental and notoriously difficult algorithmic problem. This talk focuses on the restricted problem of determining the complexity of coloring graphs which do not contain a certain induced subgraph. Combining results of Kamiński and Lozin, and Hoyler, it follows that this problem remains NP-complete unless the excluded induced subgraph is a disjoin...
